The San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild is completing the plaza at Brickworks, 15 years after the Brickworks project first began! The finished plaza will feature an outdoor stage, year-round covered market stalls, an entryway arch, public art, and a landscaped green space with outdoor seating. Brickworks Plaza will serve as a town square for Friday Harbor!

Who are the members of the Sunshine Plaza Working Group?

Team members are Pete Kilpatrick, Candace Jagel, Tanya Micheletti, Sarah Pope, Lars Sorensen (Brickworks Manager), and Rob Waldron.

Phase 1
Phase 1 is complete and paid for! Materials (for the stage, garbage corral, lighting, retaining/foundation walls, and plantings) came in just under $114,000. With the help of generous donors and over 1,600 hours of volunteer labor, we built beautiful Tokitae Stage and landscaped its surroundings.

Phase 2
Phase 2 is underway. The beautiful new cedar fence is done. Thanks, Pete Kilpatrick! The estimated cost of this phase (fence, market stalls, entryway arch, public art) is $113,000. With the help of generous donors, grants, and volunteers, we will complete Phase 2 in June.

Total estimated cost of Phases 1 + 2:  $227,000

What we have raised so far: $222,000

What we still need to raise: Only $5,000 for the last of Phase 2 construction costs

What if we raise over the needed amount?
Any amount raised over the cost of the project will go to a Brickworks Maintenance Endowment Fund, to keep Brickworks looking beautiful.

When will Phase 2 begin?
It has begun! The beautiful new cedar fence is up. Drawings by local architect David Waldron have passed the Town of Friday Harbor Historic Preservation Review, and the building permit application for the market stalls has been approved. Construction will begin in late April.

When will the project be completed?
Phase 2 will be completed by the end of June 2024.

What is the public artwork?
Phase 2 also includes unique public artwork by local artist Tom Small, featuring sculpted granite boulders to create seating area and a “Gathering Place.”

Who will benefit?
Short answer: Anyone who enjoys or uses the Brickworks Plaza.  That includes farmers and art market vendors and patrons, the San Juan Islands Food Hub, performers, event goers, private parties, caterers, island visitors, and the island community at large.

Can I volunteer?
